Norman shop celebrates Free Comic Book Day
Speeding Bullet Comics is challenging Norman to embrace war and “free”dom Saturday, May 1, for the 9th annual Free Comic Book Day.
“Free Comic Book Day is an opportunity for everyone to sample the best of comics — for comic fans who already love the medium, as well as people who may not have read a comic in years,” said Annette Price, co-owner of Speeding Bullet Comics, 614 N Porter Ave.
Speeding Bullet will be giving away comics from 10 am to 7 pm. Among the giveaways is “War of the Supermen” #0, co-written by former Speeding Bullet Comics employee and University of Oklahoma graduate Sterling Gates.
“Superman recently discovered a city that survived the destruction of his home planet of Krypton,” Price said. “While this was great news to Superman, when those 100,000 super-powered Kryptonians relocated next to Earth, things got a little tense. Imagine a city of the size of Norman filled with Supermen. Now, that city, led by General Zod, is about to go to war with the entire planet of Earth. Superman is caught in the middle as he tries to prevent loss of life on both sides.”
Both Gates and Eisner Award-winning co-writer James Robinson will appear at Speeding Bullet on June 12 to sign “War of the Supermen.”
To help celebrate the release of “War of the Supermen,” Speeding Bullet is declaring its own war on illiteracy.
“Free Comic Book Day is not just about free stuff. We’re promoting literacy one panel at a time. Every kid who gets a free comic book from us, reads it or has it read to them, then can tell us about it through their own words and pictures, will get something even better,” Price said. The store will give a free all-ages DC graphic novel to children ages 12 and under who write a short paragraph or draw a picture about their Free Comic Book Day book, while supplies last. “Anyone can pick up a free book, but we want to reward the kids who take these comics home and use it to kick off their summer reading.”
Other Free Comic Book Day freebies include comics featuring “Toy Story,” “Shrek,” “Iron Man,” “Sonic the Hedgehog,” “Archie,” and “Fraggle Rock.” In addition to pop-culture mainstays, readers can also pick up critically acclaimed comics like “Mouse Guard,” a medieval world where heroic mice defend their world from predatory weasels.
