Speeding Bullet Comics owner Matt Price wrote about his top 10 comics of 2014 for NewsOK! Check out the list below, then stop in the store to check out some of these great issues!

The following are Matt’s selections for the 10 best comic book series of 2014!

Wicked + Divine1.”Wicked + Divine” (Image Comics). Writer Kieron Gillen and artist Jamie McKelvie crafted this story of gods returning to Earth. In the mythology of the series, every 90 years, 12 gods incarnate as humans, to live among the people of Earth. But two years later, they are dead. This time around, most of the gods have incarnated as musicians or performers, as they still seem to crave the adulation of the masses. But these aren’t benevolent gods; Gillen looks at the relationship between art and artist as well as artist and celebrity culture through a scathing metaphorical lens here, while at the same time providing a thrilling and at times disturbing tale. Colorist Matthew Wilson brings a warm palette that provides a poppy glamor to the series. McKelvie’s layouts and designs are likewise brilliant.

2.”Saga” (Image Comics). Writer Brian K. Vaughan and artist Fiona Staples continue the story of parents from opposite sides of an intergalactic war. This mature-readers comic mixes space opera with family drama, as the relationships between characters are the true “Saga” within.

3.”The Multiversity” (DC Comics). Grant Morrison works with a variety of artists to tell the tales of many alternate worlds in the DC Comics pantheon, all apparently at risk from a coming apocalypse. There are epic ideas, heroes at the brink, and all kinds of metatextual hints to analyze.

4.”Shutter” (Image Comics). Kate Kristopher is a famous explorer in a line of famous explorers in a fantastic world in “Shutter,” from writer Joe Keatinge and artist Leila del Duca. Though she’s left that life, a family secret forces her back in this imaginative tale.

5.”Lumberjanes” (BOOM!). Writers Noelle Stevenson & Grace Ellis are joined by artist Brooke Allen in this story of five best friends at a decidedly unusual summer camp. It’s an all-ages title that really will appeal to all ages.

6.”The Fade Out” (Image Comics). The death of a movie starlet in 1948 Hollywood kicks off this noirish mystery series from Ed Brubaker and artist Sean Phillips.

7.”Transformers vs. G.I. Joe” (IDW Publishing). Writer/artist Tom Scioli, with co-writer John Barber, mixes 1980s action toys with Jack Kirby-style dynamism to create one of the most oddball, yet amazing, action titles of the year.

8.”Astro City” (DC Comics-Vertigo). Kurt Busiek and Brent Anderson (with occasional guest artists) examine the superhero genre from a variety of viewpoints in the always-excellent “Astro City.”

9.”Ms. Marvel” (Marvel Comics). Writer G. Willow Wilson and artist Adrian Alphona introduced one of Marvel’s most popular new characters in quite a while in Kamala Khan. She’s a Pakistani-American teen from New Jersey who finds herself in over her head when she receives superpowers. The character-driven drama is reminiscent of the best of early “Amazing Spider-Man” while at the same time being thoroughly modern.

10.”Low” (Image Comics). Writer Rick Remender joins artist Greg Tocchini in a beautifully drawn aquatic fantasy. After the expansion of the sun, mankind has been driven underwater to survive. While probes search for a safe haven on another planet, mankind dwindles into decadence below.
